Mr. Carlo Maucione

Gabby & Lilly

1. Describe your ordeal. Why were you there?

My twins were born a month early.  Gabby was 2.3 pounds and Lilly was 4.8 pounds.  Gabby had jaundice which is a yellow color of the skin, membranes, or eyes.  Her main problems were low birth weight, breathing, and jaundice.

2. What did you expect going in?

It was hard because we didn't know what to expect. We were in shock going into the scheduled c-section. I wasn't thrilled about going into the NICU. I wanted to be able to just take my girls home.

3. Describe a day.

Nurses that cared for the babies. They changed their outfits.

"They tried to get to know them not because they had to but because they wanted to."

4. Your experience?

The experience was something I never want for my girls ever again.

5. Relationship component, how did the nurses make you feel?

"I felt comfortable leaving them their, they were in good hands."

They gave them extra attention, well it seemed that way. We keep in contact with the nurses who have helped us. We send them gifts and flowers as often as we can to show them how much we appreciate what they did for us.

"They always went an extra mile for my girls."

6. Looking back, what do you take from the experience?

I never want to do this again. But then again looking at it, if it were the opposite and we were able to take the girls home, having to bring them would have been worse.

EQ: How does a persons relationship and actions reflect the importance of an individuals needS? And how does that translate into guiding a nurses approach to a patient?

The nurses saw my wife needed attention, she was very emotional.  They recognized that and gave her extra assistance from the beginning. It was the action of stepping up and helping her that showed they cared about her needs. A nurse not only is treating the patient but is also helping the families get through the situation.

"I told the girls to be NICU nurses. It's the perfect combination of helping people and medical blend."
"Rewarding Job."
